What Is Clubhouse And How Can You Get An Invite?

Clubhouse has very quickly become one of the most controversial apps out there. It has garnered world-wide notoriety over the past few months due to the fact that it is so exclusive – only a handful of people from around the globe have managed to crack an invite to join. An app that you need to be invited to? That’s right. So, what exactly is Clubhouse and why is it so special?

Essentially, Clubhouse is another Android and iOS social networking chat. What sets it apart from all of the others is the fact that it is based solely on audio-chat. What this means is that users are able to listen into conversations, discussions and interviews between interesting people, experts in their field, on various topics. It’s just like tuning into a live podcast, but it is very exclusive. 

The app can only be joined if a user is lucky enough to score an invite. Clubhouse cannot simply be downloaded off of an app store. Think of it as a digital yacht or country club. You need to be invited by an existing member. Just like with yacht clubs and country clubs, this elitism has opened it up to much criticism. 

What Happens When You Join?

If you do manage to crack an invite to Clubhouse, you will need to select topics of interest when you join. These range from books to business, tech and health. The more information that you provide the app with, the more recommendations it will be able to give you with regards to conversation rooms.

Think of the conversation rooms as conference calls. Some people on the call will be talking, but most of the others will simply be listening in. Once the conversation has ended, the room will be closed, and that content will no longer be available. Unlike apps such as Twitch, this content will not be accessible ever again. However, users can record the live conversations as they are happening. 

How To Score An Invite

In order to join Clubhouse, you need to be invited by an existing user of the app and then you get to signup now. Your invite will include a link that is texted to your phone number. This link will then direct you to the app’s sign-up page. While this may seem straight-forward, it’s important to remember that each Clubhouse member has a maximum of just two invitations available at first. Recently, the creators of the app announced that their goal for 2021 is to be able to open Clubhouse to the rest of the world. 

The app’s exclusive nature has drawn plenty of criticism from far and wide – surely it could be beneficial for everyone for the conversations hosted on the app to be shared? The app was launched in March of 2020. By May, it has 1,500 users and was valued at $100 million. As of 1 February 2021, the app has expanded to 2 million users and is now valued at just over $1 billion.
